Hydrogen Hubs
The recent announcement of seven hydrogen hubs selected by the DOE for nationwide development could provide the momentum needed to give hydrogen a start as a significant source of energy in the United States. However, there are several factors that could hinder industry progress and development:
- Obscure hydrogen hub plans persist even after the announcement of selected projects.
- Hourly or annual matching requirements for power supplied to electrolysis projects can have a significant impact on project economics and perceived carbon footprint.
- Production of hydrogen from natural gas reforming faces opposition from groups criticizing the perpetual use of fossil fuels.
- Demand for hydrogen remains uncertain.
- Hydrogen blending into natural gas is an easy to grasp, but inefficient and expensive use.
